A visionary street upgradation and urban design proposalMumbai’s streets are more than just conduits for movement — they are the lifelines of its social and cultural identity. Yet, as the city continues to expand, the quality of public open spaces per person has dropped drastically, predicted to fall below 1.0 square metre per individual by 2025. Recognizing this pressing urban challenge, Atelier ARBO initiated Streets4All — a street upgradation and placemaking proposal aimed at reimagining the streets of Mumbai as inclusive, vibrant, and pedestrian-friendly public realms.
The project focuses on the SEEPZ Bridge corridor in Andheri, a 2.6-kilometre-long stretch with a gentle slope and underutilized spaces beneath it. Traditionally viewed as leftover infrastructural land, the area presented a unique opportunity for urban rejuvenation. Atelier ARBO envisioned transforming this neglected corridor into a green, active, and accessible street environment that encourages movement, community interaction, and ecological balance. The proposed design integrates a hierarchy of pedestrian and cycle pathways, shaded walkways, and resting zones defined by natural materials and greenery. A key feature is the creation of a Bamboo Grove — a symbolic green spine that runs through the corridor, providing shade, improving microclimate, and enhancing visual continuity. Complementing this are paved walkways, interactive play zones for children, a mountain climbing wall, and community seating areas — all designed to humanize the scale of the street and foster a sense of belonging.
The Streets4All proposal emphasizes universal accessibility, safety, and multi-functionality — allowing pedestrians, cyclists, and informal vendors to coexist within a shared yet organized framework. Through thoughtful integration of soft landscaping, lighting, and tactile detailing, the design transforms an overlooked infrastructural zone into a complete street that prioritizes people over vehicles. Although the project has yet to be realized due to changes in governmental priorities, Streets4All continues to stand as a model of sustainable street design — one that challenges conventional perceptions and redefines what Mumbai’s streets can be. Atelier ARBO believes that urban transformation begins at the street level. This project embodies our core design philosophy: to create cities that are not only efficient but also empathetic — cities where every street, bridge, and corner can be reimagined as a place of connection, comfort, and community. |
