Redefining Education through Architecture: Prakash Nair’s Impact on Atelier ARBO’s Projects
In the evolving landscape of educational design, the influence of architecture extends far beyond aesthetics and functionality. It plays a pivotal role in shaping how students engage with their environment, their peers, and direct their own learning experiences. One of the most profound impacts on modern educational architecture has been made by Prakash Nair, an architect and educator, whose work primarily focuses on creating inspiring learning environments. His influence on Atelier ARBO, a Mumbai-based architectural firm, has been nothing short of transformative, inspiring us to create educational spaces that prioritize both environmental sustainability and student well-being.
At the intersection of innovation, sustainability, and education, Prakash Nair’s ideas have left an indelible mark on Atelier ARBO’s design philosophy. Highly influenced by his work, we have embraced a more holistic approach to institutional design that incorporates both the physical and psychological aspects of learning. Redefining the way educational spaces are conceived, our efforts are directed towards creating environments where students can thrive intellectually, socially, and emotionally.

Prakash Nair: The Visionary Behind Progressive Educational Spaces
Prakash Nair has long been a proponent of the idea that the physical environment in which students learn can have a profound impact on their development. He is known for challenging the typical classroom layouts and focusing on the concept of creating “cohesive learning spaces” – environments that are dynamic, interactive, and supportive of diverse learning needs. For Nair, education is not confined to the walls of a classroom; it extends into the spaces where students engage with the world and each other.
Nair’s philosophy revolves around designing spaces that promote curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. He advocates for schools and educational institutions to break free from traditional, rigid classroom setups in favor of more open, flexible, and adaptable environments. His designs incorporate an abundant intake of natural light and ventilation along with well-planned open green spaces, which contribute to the mental and physical well-being of students. His work underscores the belief that a well-designed learning environment can inspire both students and educators alike.

Our Vision for the Future of Education
Being highly inspired by the strategies and philosophies of Architect Prakash Nair, regarding the creation of positive learning spaces, we started our own journey of researching and understanding the different alternate educational systems. We gradually understood how, as architects, we have immense potential and responsibility to create spaces where productivity and a freedom of choice direct the learning of young children.
In our professional journey, we have been fortunate enough to work on a couple of Montessori School Projects, wherein we delved deep into the philosophical beliefs of pioneering educator Dr. Maria Montessori. The process of designing a Montessori school was quite enthralling and left us with an entire new world of knowledge and experience. Minutely observing and analyzing children helped us in understanding how children react to their surroundings and how a consciously prepared environment can have an extremely positive impact on their learning. Prakash Nair’s enlightening views and anecdotes of his own experience of designing schools proved to be an extremely valuable source of inspiration and reference for us.

Some key design philosophies of Ar. Prakash Nair that have inspired us
1.Creating Flexible, Adaptive Spaces
One key philosophy is designing spaces that can evolve with the changing needs of students. In contrast to rigid classroom designs, we focus on creating open, flexible layouts that can be easily adapted to different teaching styles, activities, and group sizes. Minimal movable furniture and open plan layouts allow for a dynamic learning environment where children can explore as per their own will and freedom.
Adaptable spaces are central to the vision of education as it is a fluid and evolving process. Students are encouraged to explore, collaborate, and interact with their environment in a way that promotes creativity and critical thinking.
2.Emphasizing Connection to Nature
Integrating nature into educational environments is another beneficial strategy, as adding indoor plantations not only improves the air quality, but also soothes the minds of young children, helping them to concentrate better. A visual and physical connection to nature significantly contributes to students' cognitive and emotional development. We strive to incorporate open green spaces, courtyards, and bright green plantations in any educational space that we get to design.
3.Promoting Collaborative Learning
Agreeing to Ar. Prakash Nair’s belief that students need to collaborate, communicate, and problem-solve together, we believe in creating spaces that facilitate collaboration, whether through group work areas, communal spaces, or informal seating arrangements.
Flexible spaces, that can be adapted for various group activities, allow students to work together, share ideas, and learn from one another. This aligns with the belief that the learning process is enhanced when students are able to engage with each other and the world around them.
4.Sustainability and Local Context
Using locally sourced materials, energy-efficient systems, and passive design strategies can reduce the environmental impact of these institutional spaces. By incorporating vernacular materials in the design, that respond to the local climate and culture, a sense of identity and belonging can be created in the minds of the students. Materials, like stone, wood, and bamboo, are some of the eco-friendly materials that add warmth to the space.

Shaping the Future of Education
Architect Prakash Nair’s ideologies represent a new wave of educational architecture that emphasizes the integration of nature, flexibility, sustainability, and student well-being and persuades us to think about the profound impact that design can have on the learning process.
Today’s world needs thinkers and strong-willed youngsters who have the capacity to take decisions for the betterment of society. Education is the only foundation on which the future of today’s youth depends. In such a scenario, as architects, we believe that every learning space that we create needs to contribute to the positive development and overall growth of children, that can ultimately lead to a strong youth class that can efficiently shoulder the responsibility of the nation.
