Our exploration of an artist’s space
Art is one of the most soothing mediums to express our thoughts, our creativity, and the whirlpool of emotions brimming inside us. A blank canvas offers the mind a sense of freedom to unleash everything it has been holding on to, making us feel lighter after transforming our thoughts into strokes of colourful shades. At Atelier ARBO, we feel that every person has an artistic temperament hidden deep within. And to effectively translate this inclination towards making art into practice, certain simple yet meaningful changes can be done in the comfortable confines of our home to create a pleasing and soulful artist space.
A Serene Escape into the world of Art
Creating an art piece involves concentration, focus, and silence – or maybe some soothing music as per every individual’s personal preference. Identifying a cozy corner or a small niche space that is tucked away from the primary zones of the house becomes the first step.
Abundant daylight plays a significant role while selecting the right space for making art. Natural sunlight illuminates the space leading to better visibility and colour scheme judgement. Hence, choosing a corner close to a large window or near a balcony can be beneficial and the visual exposure to the outside landscape of trees and cityscape can further stimulate an artist’s inspiration and creative thought process. The presence of a window also helps in enhancing natural ventilation and an optimum flow of air, especially when the frequent use of solvents and fumes is involved.
The conscious selection and placement of specific light fixtures, ideally having a colour temperature range of 5000K to 5500K, is yet another crucial aspect. Lighting plays an important role for an artist, as even a minute discrepancy in providing sufficient light can increase the strain on the eyes, leading to headaches and short-sightedness.

A Self-sufficient Space that offers Comfort and Peace
Art supplies are every artist’s priceless collection – they are essential tools that help in portraying an artist’s feelings on paper. In accordance with the kind of space that is available, smart storage solutions can be implemented to efficiently store the paints, brushes, pencils, and other tools. The vertical space can be maximized by building light-weight, seamless storage units with different sections for the varied supplies.
Another factor that is extremely important is the apt selection of furniture. When engrossed deeply in an artwork, an artist tends to work continuously for hours on end, and hence the chair and table used need to be consciously designed as per a detailed ergonomic study of posture, height, and physical comfort. Adjustable chairs and tables that can be inclined at various angles can help a person in comfortably switching positions and angles while painting or drawing.

A Canvas that tells the story of your Heart
All the above factors can lead to an efficient and functional artist space, but what really sets it apart is the personal touch of the artist. The moment you walk into your own space, an urge to create something should pull you towards the canvas. Right from inspiring artworks, your own progress sketches, and motivational posters, to soft décor elements, like, diffusers, small sculptures, and flower vases, you can adorn the space in a way that it fills your mind with positivity and warmth. An elegant music box can play some soothing tones, if music is something that calms you and helps you focus. Lush green indoor plantations can be yet another beneficial addition, as a visual connection with nature is known to exude peace and also improve the air quality of the space. Your artist space is nothing but another blank canvas waiting to be filled by the essence of your personality.
A Professional Memoir
In our journey as architects, we came across an opportunity to design an efficient space for a budding artist inside a spacious apartment in Bandstand, India. A mother of two young children, our client spent most of her days and nights making beautiful paintings, but felt a little thwarted by the inadequate arrangements of the space. Envisioning a comfortable and serene corner for her, we delved deep into researching the key requirements of an artist. The space is a cozy corner in the living room of the house, overlooking the sea through a large window.
After detailed research, we procured and installed adjustable track lights on three sides of the easel, flooding the place with different shades of lighting at the click of a button. A canvas storage unit with shelves of different heights, to store the variety of artwork sizes, is placed in the corner behind the easel. Right beside the easel, few shelves become the ideal place to store paints and other art supplies. Both, the easel and the chair, have adjustable heights and angles to significantly enhance the comfort of our client, as she continues to paint for hours at a stretch.
