​Scope of Work: Interior Design

Project Overview:
Atelier ARBO, under the direction of Architect Rinka, was engaged to design the interiors of a 1,500 sq. ft. Montessori school in Sanpada, Navi Mumbai. The brief called for a nurturing and engaging learning environment that aligns with Montessori principles—encouraging independence, sensory exploration, and freedom within structure.
Design Philosophy:
Inspired by the Montessori method’s emphasis on self-directed learning, the interior design prioritizes order, accessibility, and calmness. The space has been planned to foster a child’s natural curiosity while offering a safe, aesthetically balanced setting that supports cognitive, emotional, and social development.
Key Features:

• Child-Centric Design: All elements—from furniture height to display shelves—are designed at a scale suited for young learners, encouraging autonomy and free movement.
• Zoning & Flow: The layout is organized into purposeful zones: practical life, sensorial, language, mathematics, and a quiet reading nook—each carefully designed to be visually connected but functionally distinct.
• Materiality & Palette: A natural, muted palette of wood, whites, and soft pastels creates a soothing backdrop, allowing Montessori materials to visually stand out and reducing sensory overload.
• Natural Light & Ventilation: Large windows and open layouts ensure ample daylight, essential for well-being and concentration, while maintaining airiness and comfort throughout the day.
• Sustainable Choices: Eco-conscious materials and non-toxic finishes were chosen in alignment with both Montessori philosophy and Atelier ARBO’s commitment to sustainability.
• Storage & Order: Integrated, low-height storage encourages self-selection and cleanup, reinforcing the Montessori emphasis on responsibility and order.

The result is a calm, organized, and stimulating environment where young children can thrive. This Montessori school interior reflects Atelier ARBO’s design ethos—one that balances function, aesthetics, and a deep sensitivity to the user’s experience.
