Master Planning of 5 Acre Residential Township at Lagos, Nigeria
____________________________________________________

Plot Area: 5.0 Acre
Location: Lagos, Nigeria
Year: December 2021 onward
Scope of Work: Conceptual Architectural & Landscape Design
With the advancement of new infrastructure and services, the culture of living in a township has altered dramatically. Developers offer more than just residential structures, but also other amenities in the most effective way possible, in order to cater to upscale living standards.

This Residential Township is a proposal developed for Lagos, Nigeria, a densely populated metropolis which has a great impact on business, entertainment, technology, education, politics, and tourism. Therefore, this shift towards Township initiatives is motivated by the need to give people the freedom of space, which is becoming a pressing problem in this space-starved urban city.

Built on 5.0 acres of land, the proposal comprises five residential blocks, including supplementary infrastructure that caters to the upper middle class socio-economic demography. The brief for these mid-rise buildings aims to create a range of apartments to suit varying family sizes, along with recreational amenities, on the perimeter of Largos to create a one-stop solution for a number of everyday needs.

Site planning was executed in a way that optimizes the spatial configuration to comfortably fit in a large number of residential units. The angular arrangement of the design on this trapezoid plot of land creates a series of playful communal spaces that are interlinked with each other, while also allowing provision for ample green pockets that embrace these communal spaces, shielding the users from the tropical climate of Largos.

The five residential blocks are categorized according to the unit type, which includes studio apartments, 2-bedroomed, and 3-bedroomed apartments. All apartment units ensure desirable living conditions, along with spacious and excellent infrastructures, and dedicated amenities so that the residents can enjoy hassle-free and convenient living. Each building block includes a spacious common lobby and an accessible roof terrace which become interesting niches for community gatherings.

Other amenities in the township include a clubhouse with a swimming pool, a central park, a children's park, a Basketball court, and sufficient personal parking facilities. All the blocks are raised to stand on pilotis, creating a cohesive flow between the communal spaces and the buildings at ground level, thus generating highly sociable spaces.

Each building block is segregated into 4 components, which allows each individual apartment to have numerous fenestrations that give access to views, and facilitate cross-ventilation and daylighting, thus resulting in satisfactory living conditions. Furthermore, this emphasis on responding to the local climate makes the buildings very energy efficient.

A harmonious relationship between the house and the natural environment is reflected in the building language as well. The materiality of the project seeks neutral, earthy tones that articulate the aesthetics of the building as it stands in the middle of lush greenery. All vertical structural elements are highlighted through the use of brick, which is a nod of acknowledgement to the traditional building methods of the region.

Overall, the design shows an efficient amalgamation of architecture and urban design, which has resulted in an interesting township that helps enhance the standard of living of the residents. It is a project that effectively densifies the area while being a simplistic residential township that responds to the environment, the climate, and the users' cultures and social aspects.
