Mumbai’s rapid inclination towards large-scale developments, to house the exponentially growing population, is significantly affecting the ‘Lungs of the city’ – which are open green spaces and public parks that infuse life and a breath of fresh air in this concrete jungle. Amidst such a critical scenario, the design team of Atelier ARBO, a dynamic architectural firm, seized an opportunity to propose a conceptual design to create a 35,000 Sq.Ft invigorating Public Park in Chembur, Mumbai. Envisioning a space where the beauty of nature seamlessly blends with the act of play and movement, the Park offers two zones, a beautiful garden space with lush green vegetation and an alluring play area for young children to explore.
The garden space, present at a slightly raised level, encompasses a plethora of trees, shrubs, and flowering plants that add a vibrant colour and freshness to the park, offering visitors a blissful experience. Staggered steps, interspersed with vegetation and becoming a pause point to sit and relax, direct the visitors to the children’s play area having intriguing play apparatus that include swings, slides, and climbing frames. Beckoning children for an enthralling and adventurous experience, the play space becomes a platform to mindfully channelize the enormous amount of energy that young kids possess.
A meandering walkway runs along the entire park, smoothly binding the different zones of the space. Small seating spaces, created at regular intervals along the walkway, invite visitors to simply sit, interact, and adore the mesmerizing views of the garden as well as the play space. The pathway enables the visitors to take a leisurely stroll amidst the calming shadows of lush green trees. The vision of the design was to create a space that brings together communities, and offers them an opportunity to breathe in fresh air, admire nature, and unwind peacefully. For young children, the availability of a mindfully designed open play space becomes essential to give them an opportunity to explore, play, learn, and engage in physical activities with utmost freedom. In a city like Mumbai, where every new concrete development further cuts down the chance of breathing fresh air, the maintenance, renovation, and creation of exhilarating open spaces is the dire need of time.
