BMC Park 4 – Concept Design Proposal, Mumbai, IndiaPlacemaking lies at the heart of urban well-being, and the redevelopment of BMC Park 4 at Juhu Beachfront, Mumbai, continues Atelier ARBO’s vision of transforming everyday urban spaces into vibrant, inclusive, and sensorial public environments. Completed as a concept design on 15th October 2021, the proposal reimagines the local public park as an ecological and social landscape that celebrates the essence of Mumbai’s coastal identity.
Strategically located at the junction between the dense urban fabric of Juhu and the tranquil beachfront, the park draws inspiration from the dialogue between city and sea. This duality informed a design that is both interactive and imaginative, balancing artistic expression with functional urban needs. The park becomes a neighbourhood landmark, offering a welcoming refuge for relaxation, play, and community interaction. At the core of the proposal is a deep respect for ecology and the sensory experience of nature. The landscape design combines native and climate-responsive planting to ensure year-round comfort and beauty. Carefully selected species evoke a sense of place — their textures, aromas, and colors enriching the atmosphere and creating a multisensory journey for visitors. The planting palette also responds to the local microclimate, producing a cooling effect and mitigating heat within the dense urban surroundings. The spatial structure of the park integrates soft and hard landscape elements to shape a dynamic, human-scale environment. A 2000 sq. ft. sandstone pathway winds organically through the park, guiding visitors along jogging trails, seating pockets, and shaded green enclaves. As sunlight filters through the groves, dappled shadows dance across the pathway, bringing life to every step of the journey. The material language is unified through the use of red sandstone, chosen for its timeless appeal, durability, and tactile warmth. It defines the paving, seating edges, and sculptural features, blending seamlessly with the natural landscape. Around each seating cluster, lush greenery weaves into the built forms, softening the hardscape and creating intimate micro-environments that invite pause and reflection. The park design is anchored by dual entrances — a main approach from the landside and a secondary access from the beachfront, ensuring openness and inclusivity for all users. At the beachside entrance, a sculptural pavilion inspired by the fluid motion of sea waves provides a striking visual identity for the park. This versatile space doubles as a community gathering point, celebrating art, culture, and collective activity. At its heart, a modest performance stage creates a cultural focus, supporting small events and interactive programs that strengthen the social fabric of the neighbourhood. The park thus acts as both a tranquil retreat and a vibrant community hub, offering moments of solitude, play, and togetherness within the same environment. Through BMC Park 4, Atelier ARBO envisions a public space that connects people with nature and one another — a microcosm of urban harmony. By balancing ecological sensitivity, craftsmanship, and community spirit, the project aspires to become a benchmark for contemporary urban parks in Mumbai — one that redefines the relationship between city life and open green spaces. |
