Atelier ARBO | Landscape & Urban Design Proposal – BMC Park 2, MumbaiPublic parks in dense urban neighborhoods serve as essential breathing spaces — places where nature, play, and people come together. The BMC Park 2 Concept Design Proposal by Atelier ARBO envisions a renewed green lung within Mumbai’s urban fabric, designed to foster community connection, inclusivity, and ecological sensitivity.
Located in a vibrant residential precinct, the park reimagines an underutilized municipal plot into a multi-sensory, child-friendly, and socially engaging urban park. The design seeks to transform a simple green ground into a place of interaction, learning, and leisure — an accessible haven where every visitor can find a moment of joy and calm. Rooted in the philosophy of placemaking through landscape, the concept integrates soft and hard landscape elements to create a dynamic and resilient environment suited to Mumbai’s tropical monsoon conditions. Lush native planting frames the park, providing both privacy and ecological richness. Carefully selected trees and shrubs offer texture, fragrance, and seasonal color, while also supporting biodiversity and cooling the microclimate. A central play mound forms the heart of the park — designed with natural topography, playful slopes, and tactile surfaces that encourage exploration and movement. Surrounding it, shaded seating courts and paved plazas invite parents, elders, and neighbours to rest, converse, or simply enjoy the unfolding life of the park. The design emphasizes human-scale experiences through materiality and detail. Locally sourced red sandstone and exposed concrete have been used for pathways, benches, and retaining edges — chosen for their durability, natural warmth, and harmony with the earthy landscape palette. Subtle patterns on paving and textured surfaces create visual depth and playful interaction with sunlight throughout the day. A meandering pathway weaves through the park, linking all activity zones — from a sensory garden and amphitheatre nook to open lawns and shaded pavilions. The path also serves as a jogging and walking loop, promoting health and wellness within the community. Integrated lighting ensures safety and enhances the park’s evening character, extending its use beyond daylight hours. Sustainability lies at the core of the proposal. Permeable paving, native planting, and rainwater percolation zones are incorporated to manage stormwater and reduce heat gain. Solar-powered lighting and low-maintenance materials ensure long-term ecological and economic viability. The BMC Park 2 proposal is not just a landscape intervention — it is a neighbourhood catalyst designed to nurture social bonds and human-nature relationships. By combining ecological awareness with aesthetic sensibility, the design transforms a municipal park into a model for inclusive, contemporary urban living. Ultimately, this proposal envisions a space that belongs to everyone — a place where children play, elders rest, and communities come together under the shade of trees. A park that reflects the rhythm of Mumbai itself: vibrant, resilient, and full of life. |
