Urban Park Design Proposal – BMC Park 1, Mumbai, MaharashtraUrban parks form the living lungs of a city, offering essential relief from dense urbanization and providing equitable access to open green space. The BMC Park 1 Concept Design Proposal by Atelier ARBO envisions a vibrant, inclusive, and ecologically sensitive public park in the heart of Mumbai, designed to rejuvenate community life through nature, play, and artistic engagement.
Situated within a bustling residential neighbourhood, the park reimagines a modest municipal ground into an interactive and immersive urban landscape that prioritizes children’s play, ecological balance, and community well-being. Conceived as a contemporary green retreat, the design seeks to transform the everyday experience of a local park into a place of discovery, connection, and joy. The proposal integrates a layered landscape strategy — blending soft and hard design elements to respond to Mumbai’s tropical coastal climate. Lush indigenous plantations, flowering shrubs, and shaded tree canopies create a cool and refreshing microclimate, while colourful ground covers add a sense of visual delight. The selection of plants emphasizes native species that thrive naturally, reducing maintenance while enhancing biodiversity. A network of curved walking paths weaves through the landscape, connecting diverse zones such as play lawns, shaded seating areas, and a sensory garden. The central play plaza is designed as the heart of the park — combining tactile play elements, sculptural forms, and water features to stimulate children’s imagination and encourage movement. Natural materials such as red sandstone, terracotta, and textured concrete have been thoughtfully chosen to blend with the earthy tones of the landscape while ensuring durability and ease of upkeep. The interplay of sunlight, shadow, and texture transforms the park’s ambience throughout the day, creating a dynamic and sensorial experience for users. Accessibility and inclusivity form the core of the design. The park layout ensures barrier-free movement for all visitors — children, elderly, and differently abled users alike. Ample seating niches, shaded pavilions, and open lawns invite families and neighbours to gather, rest, and interact in comfort. At the periphery, a community corner with an open amphitheatre provides space for small events, storytelling, and cultural gatherings — fostering a sense of belonging and shared ownership among residents. Solar lighting, stormwater percolation pits, and permeable paving demonstrate the park’s commitment to sustainability and low-impact design. The BMC Park 1 Concept thus redefines what a neighbourhood park can be — not merely a green space, but a thoughtfully crafted urban ecosystem that nurtures community ties, environmental awareness, and childhood wonder. With its poetic balance of play, nature, and art, the proposal envisions a landmark of civic pride and human connection within the dense fabric of Mumbai. |
